Sure-Seal Pavement Maintenance Inc., (www.SureSealPavement.com), the Greater Toronto Area’s leading pavement maintenance and repair company, is weighing in on claims from British researchers that they have developed technology to predict the formation of potholes.

British researchers have found a way to utilize 2D and 3D scanner technology to spot what they call “ravelling,” a term used to identify the beginnings of potholes. The scanners are posted on the front of a van as it rides around at standard speeds, taking images of the roads as it passes. Bradshaw observes that Toronto fills 4,000 potholes each day. And with moisture playing a big factor in the creation of potholes, that number looks like it will remain the same as it has for the past couple of years unless something can be done.

“It’ll be interesting to see just how effective this system can be once they get the technology to where they want it to be,” he adds. “With the pothole problems here in Toronto, the city could really benefit from a machine like this.”
