How Do You Know if Your Parking Lot Catch Basin Needs Repair?

Catch basins are an important part of every business’s parking lot design and construction. They prevent floods by draining storm water and sending it to the underground sewer system. Whether you’re located in Brampton or other parts of the GTA, proper catch basin repairs and regular maintenance will ensure your commercial parking lot remains safe, clean, and attractive for you, your customers, and your employees. It also guarantees the longevity of your drainage system, so if you notice any irregularities such as water pooling or overflow in your parking lot, make sure you call an asphalt maintenance contractor immediately.

3 Signs Your Parking Lot Catch Basin Needs Repairs

Procrastinating when it comes to necessary parking lot repairs is never a good idea, especially if you notice crumbling asphalt surrounding your catch basin, your drainage system is severely clogged, or water pooling in different parts of your parking lot.

Crumbling Asphalt Near Your Catch Basin

Crumbling asphalt is never a good sign. It could mean one of three things:

  • The asphalt is of a low-grade quality
  • The contractor didn’t do a good job of applying it
  • There’s a problem with your catch basin.

Extreme weather conditions, such as heavy snow and rain, can wreak havoc on the foundation of your asphalt, especially the areas surrounding your catch basin. If for some reason, your catch basin isn’t working correctly and it’s not draining the water from your parking lot, then the water won’t evaporate on its own; it’ll just pool in that one area and eventually erode the asphalt. This can cause liability issues for you as the property owner because it creates an unsafe and unpleasant environment for anyone who uses your parking lot.

Clogged Drainage System

Even the best drainage system on the market can break down if it’s not properly maintained. Your drainage system can easily get clogged if you don’t frequently clean up your parking lot by removing litter, fallen leaves and other debris. Once a year, you should examine the condition of your parking lot catch basin and drainage system to make sure that everything is running smoothly and no repairs are required. The longer you leave your drainage equipment in disrepair, the more the problem will escalate and the cost of fixing it will increase exponentially.

Pooling

Pooling usually indicates that your parking lot might have been sloped unevenly or incorrectly during construction. This is signified by water that collects in one or more parts of your parking lot and remains stagnant there. Over time, that water will eventually penetrate through porous parts of the asphalt and weaken its foundation leading to large, unsightly cracks and potholes. Not only is this damage unsightly, it’s also potentially dangerous and could cost a great deal of money to repair or replace the asphalt.
