Asphalt milling is a relatively new pavement repair technique that’s employed to restore damaged asphalt in the commercial paving industry. The process, which involves removing damaged layers of asphalt and recycling it to create a new hot or cold aggregate, was developed in the early 1970s. Since then, it’s developed tremendously, and the cost-saving and environmentally friendly attributes are undeniable. All in all, milling has revolutionized the face of pavement restoration everywhere.

Affordable Pavement Restoration

Small businesses and property owners are always concerned with protecting their investments and part of being a responsible property owner means maintaining your asphalt parking lot. Asphalt milling is an affordable repair and maintenance practice because it essentially breaks down and recycles your existing pavement. The asphalt that’s collected from your parking lot is transported to a facility where it’s crushed into fine gravel and then mixed together with a hot or cold aggregate. Not having to purchase new materials for the aggregate can save you a lot of money for the project.

Make Your Asphalt More Adaptable to Different Weather Conditions

Aside from saving you money on potentially expensive repairs and restorations, using your existing asphalt to create new hot or cold mix aggregates also means that you can fortify it to make it more adaptable to different weather conditions. This is especially important if you live in an area with extremely cold winters or very hot summers. The drastic temperature changes, not to mention weather conditions like heavy snow, rain, ice, and sleet, can all damage your asphalt over time. But finely ground aggregates that are perfectly amalgamated together have a much greater ability to withstand harsh weather conditions for longer periods of time.

How Asphalt Milling Strengthens the Overlay

In addition to being adaptable to varying weather conditions, milling also strengthens the overlay of your asphalt pavement by making it virtually impenetrable. Water, dirt, dust, regular usage and other external elements are typically the primary culprit when it comes to asphalt degradation over time. Extracting the affected portions of the existing asphalt and grounding it up into a fine mixture helps the particles bond closer together during the mixing process. Once the liquid asphalt is applied to the property, it quickly begins to cure and harden, which helps strengthen the mixture. As long as the property is thoroughly swept to remove all debris and you give it enough time (about 24-48 hours) to cure before resuming usage, then the asphalt pavement will require minimal maintenance and should last for many years.

Lower Your Carbon Footprint

Asphalt milling is an extremely environmentally-friendly commercial paving and repair process because it recycles old asphalt to make it new and functional again. In fact, asphalt is one of the most recycled materials in the world and it’s versatile enough to be used in numerous different ways including for roofing shingles, rubber tires, and so much more.
