Pothole repair is an essential service that is required year-round, regardless of the weather conditions. It can repair roads, parking lots, and driveways and also prevent the potholes from getting worse. There are two types of asphalt mixes used to fix potholes: cold patch and hot patch asphalt. In this blog post, we will explore whether cold patch asphalt is a reliable paving solution. Keep reading!
When it comes to filling cracks and potholes, typically, hot mix asphalt is used. Hot mix asphalt is a combination of various aggregates that must be heated before mixing. It is the most common type of asphalt used for repairs because it is highly reliable and durable; however, it can only be applied in warm, dry weather.
When hot mix asphalt repairs aren’t possible, cold patch products can be used. They can be used when the outside temperature ranges between -17 and 10 degrees Celsius, as well as when the outside temperature is too hot for hot mix asphalt, such as when it is 40 degrees Celsius or higher.
A mixture of bitumen emulsion, aggregates, polymers, and other additives, cold patch asphalt is designed to be a temporary fix for damage on roadways and in parking lots. It is not a long-term solution. As the most basic type of asphalt, it requires little preparation for use and due to its unique composition, it has a longer shelf life compared to hot mix asphalt.
Applying cold patch asphalt is a simple process. First, the pothole is thoroughly cleaned to remove debris, loose asphalt, and water. Then, the hole is filled with the cold patch material to be spread evenly up to the ground level. It is then compacted in place before the area is opened to vehicle and foot traffic again.
There are many benefits to using cold patch asphalt, especially when the more permanent option of hot patch asphalt is not viable. That said, there are some disadvantages to be aware of.
So, is cold patch asphalt a quick fix or a lasting solution? There are many limitations to using cold patch asphalt due to its longevity and durability, and in the end, it’s a temporary fix. It is not recommended unless there are no other options available.
The reality is that potholes can appear at any time throughout the year and need to be repaired ASAP to ensure the safety of everyone who uses a roadway or parking lot. And quite often, potholes will appear when the weather is not ideal. For a temporary fix due to time limits, extreme temperatures, and budget constraints, cold patch asphalt repairs may be the answer.
But cold patch asphalt is only designed to last for one or two seasons if properly manufactured, installed, and applied with the right equipment. Over time, with exposure to moisture, heavy-weighted traffic, and excessive use, potholes that have been repaired with cold patch asphalt will likely reappear. That is why potholes and other asphalt-related damages require hot patch asphalt repairs as a more permanent solution.
To save time, money, and worry, consider having a professional paving service perform an inspection to assess the extent of the asphalt damage and offer the best solution for your immediate needs.
