Toronto, Canada (PRWEB), February 20, 2015 – Sure-Seal Pavement Maintenance Inc. (www.SureSealPavement.com), the Greater Toronto Area’s leading pavement maintenance and repair company, is releasing its expert tips on the installation of asphalt overlay in view of the upcoming spring and summer seasons.
“First and foremost, asphalt overlays should only be installed over stable paved areas with minimal cracking and settlement.” says Lance Bradshaw, president and CEO of Sure-Seal Pavement Maintenance Inc. “It’s a pavement maintenance option that does involve several steps, but one that will benefit the structural integrity of the paved surface area over the short and long term.”
Bradshaw explains that an overlay basically uses a new cross section of asphalt to cover up the existing surface, which may have suffered the effects of environmental damage, such as the winter we’re currently having, or surface degradation. The layers used to cover the current surface are typically thin, between about one inch to an inch-and-a-half in thickness, according to Bradshaw.
“The key to properly installing asphalt overlay is to ensure the structure of the existing pavement is sound and capable of bonding to the overlay, as well as being level and clean,” he adds. “And for instances when the surface isn’t level, an asphalt mill will be able to get it down to a consistent height with the curbs or sidewalks.”
Bradshaw notes that if these initial steps are followed, the benefits of installing an asphalt overlay will become apparent. The first and most obvious benefit of asphalt overlay is that it makes small defects disappear under the new surface; a strong surface appearance is more visually appealing and improves the ride quality and skid resistance.
”Asphalt overlay is a more cost-effective means of dealing with minor damages and helps with the drainage, with different techniques for high-traffic and low-traffic surface areas,” Bradshaw concludes. “Typically, smaller aggregates will be used for low-traffic, low-friction surfaces, while larger, more angular aggregates will be used for high-traffic zones.”
